Kungkungan Bay Resort

Kungkungan was the original resort in the Lembeh Strait and as such pioneered the diving. KBR is located in its own private bay, with year-round calm waters. The resort’s bay is also home to a fully protected house-reef, which is for the exclusive enjoyment of KBR guests only. Diving packages at KBR include unlimited house reef diving and when you’re not on the house reef you will be out boat diving at some of Lembeh’s amazing critter dives sites. Kungkungan Bay Resort is located in the very heart of the Lembeh Strait, giving access to fifty dive sites, all within fifteen minutes of the resort.

KBR is a sea level luxury resort, with 16 out of their 17 rooms being beachfront.

Beachfront Cottage Suites
These beautiful Coconut Wood cottages are the original rooms that KBR opened with in 1994. These rooms were built with the help of a Woodworking School run by Missionaries that is located in Tomohon. Over the years, these rooms have seen numerous upgrades, rebuilds and refurbishments to keep them fresh and beautiful. From KBR’s opening, the Cottages have been very popular with guests. These are duplex units that have a large spacious layout, with an Air Conditioned Bedroom and a separate Fan-Cooled Living Room. The large Bathroom is attached to the bedroom and has a big Stone Walk-In Shower. There is a large Waterfront Veranda with chairs that is shared with your neighbour and which has beautiful views of the Bay and the Strait and beyond.

Beachfront Traditional Houses
This is KBR’s first level of upgrade in their room categories. The buildings we used to create these rooms were originally built in the village of “Woloan” in the Tondono Highlands. Each villager would build one of these beautiful wooden houses in their front yard. KBR drove down the road and chose 4 houses from the many, which they then took apart and reassembled in the location where you see them today. These rooms are separate units and are “L shaped” with a Queen-sized Bed at each end of the “L”. That makes this room perfect for non-couples as this gives each bed some privacy from the other. There is a common sitting area located between the foot of each bed and a wood and stone bathroom with a Walk-In Shower. In addition to the above standard amenities, this room is equipped with Satellite TV with Movie Channels.

Beachfront Villas
The Beachfront Villas were designed in house as the resorts Luxury Rooms and they were built by the Craftsmen of KBR. The Beachfront Villas are separate units with a large open floor plan that includes a sitting area, a separate work area with desk & chair and a wardrobe for storage. The attached bathroom has a Bathtub and a separate Stone Walk-In Shower. There is a very large Veranda with breathtaking views of the Bay. Each Veranda has a dining table and comfortable chairs where you can enjoy some delicious food from KBR’s Room Service in privacy and comfort. In addition to the above standard amenities, this room is equipped with Satellite TV with Movie Channels.

Hillside Villa
The Hillside Villa is KBR’s version of a Tree-House. It is a romantic two story building with an Air Conditioned sitting area on the 1st floor. The 2nd floor is the Air Conditioned bedroom with French Doors that open onto a small balcony that is basically at tree top level and the view is fantastic. The attached bathroom has a Bathtub and a separate Stone Walk-In Shower. In addition to the above standard amenities, this room is equipped with Satellite TV with Movie Channels.

Beachfront Owner’s Suite
This is the 4th building KBR bought from the village of Woloan. This room was upgraded to KBR’s VIP Suite in 2010. This Suite has 2 bedrooms, a large bedroom with a luxury King-size bed and a comfortable daybed for curling up with a book, and a second smaller bedroom with 2 twin beds. The bathroom has been upgraded with stylish Vanity and Shower fixtures. We have even installed a Bidet equipped toilet. The living room has beautiful Rattan Furniture, Mini-Bar, separate Desk & Chair and a 32 inch Flat screen Satellite TV. There is a separate Air Conditioning unit for each of the rooms. The front porch of this room is up off the ground as this is a stilt house. It is private and has great views of the resort and strait. This room is centrally located in the resort, so it is close to everything. The Owners Suite has all the above standard room amenities and the amenities of the Villas.

KBR’s Tepi Laut Spa (Sea Side Spa) is a place to relieve stress, forget daily worries, to relax sore and tired muscles, and a place to be pampered by KBR’s amazing staff of professional massage and beauty technicians. Everything from the beautiful sculptures and water bowls filled with Fresh floating Flowers to the gurgling water fountain are designed get you in that “Spa” mood. If you are here with your significant other, no worries, KBR have a couples massage room where you can get a rubdown together. The Tepi Laut Spa is centrally located in the resort at the Swimming Pool area and is an easy stroll from any room. The Spa has many massages, treatments and services to make you feel good and look rejuvenated.

KBR’s octagon shaped, over the water main building has become an Icon in North Sulawesi. It is home to the Resort Lobby, the Main Dining Room and Capt. Billy’s Bar. Here you can literally dine over the coral reef and colorful reef fish of the bay, all the while enjoying the great views of the Strait and the surrounding Tropical Islands.

KBR’s Main Dining Room is open 24 hrs and is Full Menu Service. The restaurant serves “International Cuisine” with dishes coming from many parts of the world. Capt. Billy’s Bar is a social center for the resort. It is a great place to relax with a “Sundowner” at the end of a great day of diving. Capt. Billy’s also serves great “American Bar Food” to accompany the Delicious Drinks. Enjoy them both on the second floor balcony overlooking the Bay.

Another centerpiece of the resort is the beautiful Waterfront Infinity Pool. Here you can relax after your dive, or anytime you feel the need. The pool area offers a beautiful view of Lembeh Strait with all of its local color as well as a convenient swim-up bar. The Pool Area also serves as a social gathering place and, weather permitting, KBR will often offer a weekend evening Bar-B-Q. Besides great food, the pool offers a festive evening atmosphere with romantic lighting and its centerpiece waterfall.

KBR House Reef
Kungkungan Bay Resort is proud to offer North Sulawesi’s only truly exclusive dive site. Kungkungan Bay (our House Reef) can only be dived by our in-house guests. No fishing has been allowed in Kungkungan Bay since the resort opened, way back in 1994, making this without doubt the fishiest dive site anywhere in the Strait – and it’s your alone to enjoy, when you stay at KBR.

Diving the Lembeh Strait
For macro photography it is hard to compete with Lembeh in North-East Sulawesi. Open up any coffee table book featuring macro critters and you can be sure Lembeh’s name will appear again and again. The list of critters that can be encountered at Lembeh is endless. During our last visit to Lembeh the diving blew us away – it was even better than our first visit and the Blue Ring’s we had come to see were there in abundance. It definitely pays to do your research if you want to photograph a particular critter! Our dive sites included famous names like Nudi Retreat, Hairball and Nudi Falls and the array of critters we encountered was spectacular – Hairy Frogfish, Juvenile Warty Frogfish, Robust Ghost Pipefish, Hairy Octopus, Flamboyant Cuttlefish, Wunderpus, Mimic Octopus, Hairy Shrimp, Lembeh Sea Dragon, and Pontohi Pygmy Seahorse all made their way in front of our camera! But in places like Lembeh it is not just about finding and photographing these critters, if you stick around you can easily watch each of their unique behaviours – Pygmy Cuttlefish feeding, Lizardfish hunting their prey, Goby and Shrimp living together and our highlight – two Blue Ring Octopus feeding and mating!
